How the Pinion Gear Works in a Mining Shovel:
The swing system in an electric rope shovel usually employs two drive units of the same kind. A vertical forged pinion gear, which is powered by the reducer, is a part of each unit. This pinion mesh with the big swing gear located at the bottom of the machine and thus the whole upper structure is moved in a very natural way.
We provide forged gears that are utilized at several transmission stages, such as multi-stage reducer gears (Z3-Z6), swing pinions (Z7), and the big swing gear (Z8).
Materials and Manufacturing:
Depending on different mining conditions, we offer the choice of three materials:
1. Forged Steel (e.g., 40Cr, 40CrNi)
After going through quenching and tempering it offers a good combination of strength and toughness together with hardness approximately HB 280-320. Implementation of medium-speeds and medium-loads is its area of application.
2. Alloy Steel (e.g., 20CrMnTi)
Through carburizing and quenching, the teeth reach HRC 58-62 while the core is still tough. It is very good in situations with high speed and heavy load, and it is quite common for the gears of the main transmission to be used.
3. Cast Steel (ZG45, ZG55, etc.)
The main reason for using it for gear is large diameters or complicated shapes. Normalizing or tempering is used to improve the mach ability. Its wear resistance is a bit lower than that of the forged steel but it still performs well in several applications.

Choosing Materials:
Load conditions: Heavy impact → carburized low-carbon steel will do; high-speed closed gears → medium-carbon steel is the right choice.
Working environment: If open or low-lubrication, cast steel will be less susceptible to scuffing.
Cost and feasibility: We select the most cost-effective material which still meets the required performance.
How to Avoid Gear Failures:
Do not overload: The shovel should not be working beyond its capacity. In such cases instant shock loads can cause the gear to crack.
Keep the machine running smoothly: Do not allow sudden accelerations or emergency stops to avoid gear tooth impact.
Lubricate the oil timely: Follow the equipment manual, replace the gear oil at the recommended intervals, and keep the gearbox free of dirt.
FAQ:
1. What shovels are your gears compatible with?
They are compatible with 10 m³ electric rope shovels. Also, we can make other dimensions if you provide us with the drawings.
2. Is it possible for you to provide a full set (Z3-Z8)?
Absolutely, full sets are deliverable by us so as to ensure correct gear engagement.
3. To what extent of hardness are you able to?
Carburizing and quenching: HRC 58–62
Quenching and tempering: HB 280–320
4. Are you issuing inspection reports?
Yes, all the inspection documents are at your disposal.
